Short-Term Medical Plans

Short-term medical plans are essentially what their name indicates. They are medical plans for a limited term usually ranging from 1 month to 12 months, though most plans can be renewed up to three times bringing the coverage term equivalent of up to 3 years.  There is no enrollment period for short-term plans, so they can be purchased at any time of year and coverage can begin as soon as the next day.

Short-term medical plans do not provide Minimum Essential Coverage as defined under the Affordable Care Act.  Most will NOT cover any pre-existing conditions, maternity coverage, and mental health.  They will have a delayed time period from the inception of the policy, usually one week, for illness coverage, though coverage for injuries begins immediately.

Short-term medical plans can be a temporary solution to help fill gaps in coverage.  They are ideal for students looking for coverage to satisfy college requirements for the semester or the full school year and do not want to commit to a standard health plan.  Short-term plans are also a good option for people in between jobs or those waiting for the ACA enrollment and do not want any lapses in coverage.

Health Plans of Texas offers a large variety of short-term medical plans with a wide range of deductibles, copays, and ancillary care options.  Remember, there are no enrollment periods for this type of plan, so if you think a short-term medical plan might be right for you, give us a call!
